Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE)

The Government of India set up Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), also referred to as 'BEE' or Bureau' on 1st March 2002 under the provisions of the EC Act, 2001.

In May 2006 ministry of power Government of India formally launched the standards and labeling (S & L) scheme for its voluntary adaption in the country. Government of India enacted the Energy Conservation (EC) Act, 2001 to realize the benefits of energy efficiency through reduced energy consumption. The mission of the Bureau is to assist in developing policies and strategies with a thrust on self-regulation and market principles, within the overall framework of the EC Act, 2001 with the primary objective of reducing energy intensity of the Indian economy. Energy efficiency institutional practices and programs in India are being guided through various voluntary and mandatory provisions of the Act.

The scheme was launched by the Hon'ble Minister of Power in May,2006 and is currently invoked for equipments/appliances Room Air Conditioner (Fixed Speed), Ceiling Fan, Colour Television, Computer, Direct Cool Refrigerator, Distribution Transformer, Domestic Gas Stove, Frost Free Refrigerator, General Purpose Industrial Motor, Monoset Pump, Openwell Submersible Pump Set, Stationary Type Water Heater, Submersible Pump Set, Tfl, Washing Machine (Semi/Top Load/Front Load), Ballast, Solid State Inverter, Office Automation Products, Diesel Engine Driven Monosetpumps For Agricultural Purposes, Diesel Generator Set, Led Lamps, Room Air Conditioner (Variable Speed), Chillers, Agricultural Pumpset, Microwave Oven.

Mandatory Scheme

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency initiated the standards & Labeling program for equipment and appliances in 2006 to provide the consumer an informed choice about the energy saving and thereby the cost saving potential of the relevant marketed product. The energy efficiency labeling programs under BEE are intended to reduce the energy consumption of appliance without diminishing the services it provides to consumers.

The scheme is invoked for 26 equipment/appliances including 10 for which it is mandatory. The estimated savings from these labeling program have been about 12000 MW since 2007.
