Environmental Testing Types & Processes

Environmental testing can improve product robustness, product reliability and production processes, increasing yields and reducing warranty expenses and exposure. The subsequent adoption of environmental testing techniques by the commercial electronics industry has been gaining momentum ever since. Increased product robustness and reliability, improved production processes and reduced warranty expenses are some of the benefits that have been realized.

Environmental testing can be measured based upon the simulation and stimulation.

In Simulation conditions a products see a normal environmental conditions which often pass because the environmental stresses applied to the product—such as temperature, humidity, and vibration—do not exceed its intended use. Once the product passes the simulation test it’s ready for market or consumer use.

Stimulation uses stresses to uncover a product’s weaknesses and limits, often stressing a product to the point of failure and beyond. For example, the temperature would gradually increase in an attempt to find the highest temperature at which the product will operate and where damage will occur. Once the product fails, it is determined whether the failure is acceptable or if it needs to be fixed prior to market introduction.

What is environmental testing?

Environmental testing simulates the different climatic conditions and mechanical stress that products are exposed to during their lifetime. Environmental testing will expose weaknesses in a product’s design or performance that could occur in service, particularly at extreme levels.

Importance: It demonstrate that your products have the build quality to work perfectly, no matter what the conditions. During testing, possible weaknesses can be identified and product improvements can be initiated at an early stage. It also helps demonstrate compliance of your products with international regulations, making it easier to access global markets. Environmental testing also boosts trust in your products.

MR LAB’s environmental testing puts even the most complex products through their paces

With MR LAB as your partner, you can be confident that your testing needs are covered, no matter how complex your product is or to which industry sector it belongs to. With globally accredited environmental testing laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025), we verify the fitness for use of components, technical equipment and products. Our facilities can simulate either single or multiple environmental conditions simultaneously. Our climatic chambers cover the extremes of temperature, altitude, humidity, temperature cycling, solar heating and corrosive atmospheres, which are continuously monitored by independent computer-controlled data collection systems. Our vibration shakers produce a range of profiles including; sinusoidal, random and bump among others, which are controlled and monitored by state of the art equipment and software.

What kind of environmental testing can MR LAB perform?

We provide a comprehensive range of environmental testing services, including:

  • HALT and HASS testing
  • Life testing
  • Production monitoring
  • Shock and vibration testing
  • Vibration testing of all types of technical products, including laser vibrometry
  • Standards compliance testing
